Okay, I have a recipe like:

1. Mix this and that together.

2. Preheat oven to 350.

Fine and dandy, but it keeps indenting #2 and I can't make it go away! I'm
ready to type the thing into Notepad; help!

Ahhh, my pet peeve... along with the "drawing canvas".

Tools > autocorrect > select the "autoformat as you type"
tab > uncheck the "automatic bulleted lists" and "automatic
numbered lists".

Now go to Format > Bullets and Numbering.

To modify bulleted list or numbered list formats

1. Select the paragraphs that have the bullet or number
format you want to change.

2. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering, and then
click the tab for the type of list you want to modify.

3. Click the list format that matches your list's existing
bullet or number format.

4. Click Customize.

5. Select the formatting options you want.

For Help on an option, click the question mark and then
click the option.

Word applies the changes you make the next time you click
Bullets or Numbering on the Formatting toolbar.

HTH!

G'Day Julie,

EITHER

Type in all the steps first AS PARAGRAPHS (without numbers),
then select them all, and apply 'numbering'

OR

Select 'numbering first, then type in all steps as PARAGRAPHS.
When you hit 'Enter' at the end of each paragraph, it will be
automatically numbered.

Best of all, disable the AutoFormat features as Barbara suggested, then
apply the List Number style, which is already formatted to do just what you
want.

You do not say which version of Word you are using. In Word 2003 I
would do the following:

Go to Insert > Autotext > Autotext. Go to the 'autoformat as you type'
tab and uncheck the item 'Automatic list with numbers.'

Good luck

Am I correct in assuming that you don't want the list numbered? Or i
it just that you don't want it indented? To turn off the automati
numbering, do the following:
1. "Tools" to "Autocorrect" (in XP and 2003 this is calle
"Autocorrect Options"
2. Click on the "Autoformat As You Type" tab at the top of the window
3. Uncheck "Automatic Numbered Lists" at the top right
4. Click "Ok"

Now you will have to number any outlines yourself, but it will save yo
a headache if you don't know how to use this feature. :
