Word identifies text file as a web archive

I can't open up text files in Word (Office XP. I get an
error message indicating that the file isn't a web archive.

How weird. Anyone know what is going on and what I need
to do to fix this? I tried running the "repair option" and
it didn't do anything.

I am running Office XP Professional.

Hi

Try Tools > Options > General. Tick the box "Confirm Conversion at Open".

If this box is *not* ticked, and you try to open any kind of file in Word
other than a Word document, then Word does its best to figure out what kind
of file it is, and open it accordingly. But Word's best guess is not always
right.

If this box *is* ticked, and you try to open a file in Word that is not a
Word document, you'll get a dialog box asking you what kind of file it is.
Try out the different options until you get the result you're after.
