Looking for suggestions on how to create a calendar to be
used in a form field; i.e., the user selects the date from
the calendar and it automatically fills in the form field.

There is a Calendar ActiveX control that is installed as part
of Access. This can be inserted into an *unprotected section*
of a Word form. Or into a UserForm (displayed by an Enter
macro)

The tricky thing is, though, that you have to be sure the
people who will be using your form have the control installed
on THEIR machines.
