If you only want to view Microsoft Word DOC files, first try to see if
the program Wordpad (on Accessories menu) can see the files you are
wanting to view.

If you want something more sophisticated to view Word DOC files, then
you can get a viewer from Microsoft's web site ... not exactly sure
where, but I'm sure it's easily findable as a download off of
www.microsoft.com/word

If you want to edit Word DOC files, then you'll have to go buy a copy of
Word, or the Office Package. See www.microsoft.com/office.

If you dont have word installed, you can download a viewer from:
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/wd97vwr32.aspx

No, you don't read Word documents with an operating system. You
read Word documents with a program called Microsoft Word.

No version of Windows has ever come with Word, or with any other
application software. Your previous computer, running an older
version of Windows, may have come with Word, but if so, it was
that your vendor chose to bundle Word (or Microsoft Office, which
includes Word) as part of the package he sold you.

If you just want to read Word files, you can download a free
viewer here:
http://office.microsoft.com/downloa...sion=95|97|98|2000|2002&Type=Converter|Viewer

But if want to create Word files, you need to buy it--either
standalone, as part of
Microsoft Office, or as part of Microsoft Works Suite.

Alternatively you could buy another word processing program, such
as WordPerfect, StarOffice, or the freeware OpenOffice. All of
these will give you the ability to read existing Word files.

You should be able to read and edit .doc files (Word) using WinWord which
comes with XP. (I think) You just won't have all the whistles and bells
that are part of MS Word.

Actually all he has to do is use WordPad to read *.doc and *.rtf
files.

That's WordPad not Winword. Winword is MS Word, WordPad is the free
applet included with XP that can read *.doc and *.rtf.

An Operating system like Windows XP does not include Office Applications
- just the most basic level text editor (WordPad for Windows XP). You
need to install such an applications suite - either Office XP (or you
might still be able to find Office 2000) or Microsoft Works 2003, which
provides Word as a word processor.

If all you want to do is *read* Word documents, there is a free viewer
at
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/wdvw9716.aspx

But it might not like the formats from the very latest versions of Word
