Is there a way to change the margins in the footer without
changing the page margins. I have used section breaks, but
when I change the margins in my footers it also changes
the page margins

Hi, Diana,

Don't change the "margins", instead change the "indents" in the footer
paragraphs. The indents tell Word how far the text should be from the
margins. If you want the footers to be wider than the page text, type a
minus sign before the measurements in the indent boxes.

If you need to do this for all footers, modify the paragraph format of the
Footer style; if just for a few, select those paragraphs and use Format >
Paragraph (or just drag the markers on the horizontal ruler).

Best would be to change the INDENT settings of the Footer
paragraph style.
