Word files only open as Notepad

Help!
Recently upgraded from ME to XP. When I open email Word attachments they open as Notepad files and are completely unreadable HELP
 
And if you double click a Word document when you're not in your email, do
they open in Word?

Also, what program are you using to check your email?

Are you sure that Word is installed?

Check the Windows File Associates in Explorer. Search in Help for "file
association" and read there how to make Word load when *.DOC files are
loaded.

Alternatively, reinstall Word (or Office, if that is what you have) and
it will fix all these settings and other things which may have broken
somehow or another.
 
Right - click the file and expose the shortcut menu. Select "Open With..."
Choose Word and associate Word to always open the file(s). Word must be
either installed or reinstalled.

If you don't have time to reinstall Word right away, then save the file as a
Word doc, invoke Word, and then see if you can open the file.
