Word files loading very slowly

I have installed XP Pro plus Office XP Pro since Dec. Everything was running OK. Suddendly I noticed a definite slowing down when loading Word files (regardless of size). At the bottom of the screen I get a message Requesting Virus Scan and it takes about 4 minutes foe the file to load. Any ideas appreciated!!!Thanks!!

You appear to be using Norton Anti-Virus. In the Norton Options under Misc.,
clear the check box for Enable Office Plug-in.
The Office plug-in is the cause of the requesting virus scan. This may be
the cause of your slowing down.

If the above does not fix the problem check the microsoft.public.office.misc
newsgroup. There have been recent post on other causes although the Norton
appears to be the most frequent.

Also check microsoft.public.word.application.errors newsgroup for other
fixes to this problem.

Thousands of us have experienced the same problem. It was caused by the Jan
8 definitions update. Symantec is working on it and offers a temporary
workaround.
