Word & Excell missing??

For some uknown reason my system crashed at the weekend and wiped everything.
I have run Windows XP (home edition) recovery disc, now have accessories,
notepad etc but no word or excell. They were there before the system crashed
any ideas?? Novice to computing need all the help I can get!!
 
Windows XP is an Operating system Word Excel etc are part of Ms Office
If this is a OEM store bought PC(Hp Dell Gateway etc) it may be possible
that somwhere on that disk ,since you said its a recovery disk, the Office
products you are asking for are availble there
If not the manufacturer of the PC may have them on another disk you should
contact them for assistance

If you bought an OEM computer - HP, Dell, Sony, etc. - then your
computer came with a "bundle" of preinstalled software such as MS
Office. The XP operating system does not include applications like
that. If you reinstalled Windows, you'll need to reinstall your
applications from the installation media.

I Know this will sound really dumb Malke but how do I reinstall from the
installation media? / The system is a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo t ix I got it
direct from Fujitsu. Cheers for ya help - Helen

The best place to get support for proprietary recovery sets is the vendor,
being as it is the vendor of the system who creates them..

When you bought the computer, it will have come with some CD's for
restoring the computer to factory condition including preinstalled
applications. Look through what you received from Fujitsu or call them.

Word and Excel aren't part of Windows. Probably whoever you bought
the computer from pre-loaded them (or the full Microsoft Access
suite) before turning the computer over to you. You should have been
given the install disc; if not, and you were supposed to have Office
as part of your purchase, go and ask for the disc.

AFAIK -- and I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong -- Microsoft
doesn't play the silly games with Office for OEMs -- if Office comes
on your computer, you're supposed to get the physical disc as well.

I think you're right, but if, by "silly games," you're referring to OEM
computers coming with preinstalled WIndows and no Windows installation CD,
it's not Microsoft who does that. It's the choice of the individual OEM.

Simply use the CD from which Office was originally installed to
re-install it. If Office came pre-installed on your computer, the
necessary installation CD and documentation will be with the rest of the
CDs and paperwork that came with the computer.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.

Microsoft Office does comes pre-installed on new computers when the
computer manufacturer chooses to offer it, and the purchaser is willing
to pay extra for it.

Bought my first computer 5 years ago, Paid $40.00 to have it "Set up by the
dealer," used it for three weeks before a friend noticed that I didn't have
the OS or any of the other software disks.

Went back to the store and had to get loud and obnoxious but they finally
came up three disks in a nice case. Told me most people didn't know how to
use them and didn't want them.

Makes me wonder how many other people don't get all the disks?

Most people who buy computers from the larger OEMs don't get them, because
the OEMs don't provide them.

OEM vendors are required by their agreement with Microsoft to give you a
means of reinstalling, should it be necessary. They can do this in one of
three ways:



1. An OEM copy of Windows

2. A restore CD

3. A hidden partition on your drive, with restore information.



If you don't have 1 or 2, you should have 3, but you should contact your
vendor to find out.



Personally, I find both 2 and 3 unacceptable (especially 3; a hard drive
crash can leave you with nothing), and would never choose to buy a computer
that came with an operating system unless I got a complete generic
installation CD for that operating system.
