Word Documents associating extensions as .pdf's

This is Scott Network Admin for Comtex Communications, we
had some trouble with a machine today and are puzzled on
how to fix this problem. A machine on our network did not
have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on it. The frequent
user of this machine received a PDF file in their e-mail
from Kenwood. Well, it obviously asked the user What
program they would like to open the document to. That
person chose Microsoft WORD. So in turn, the .pdf's were
changed to word files. Now I figured if I installed Adobe
Acrobat Reader on the machine that it would associate the
file Adobe, in which it did on the actual PDF's. Now
here's the kicker. It changed some of the users word
documents into a PDF format, now when that person tries
to open them and WORD opens with nothing but ASCII
garbage. I tried changing the extensions (which were
changed to .pdf but are opened with WORD on only a select
few documents) from .pdf's back to .doc figuring it would
fix the problem but it did not. I have not had time
because the user is using the machine to further
investigate the problem... but I was wondering if anyone
knew how to fix this problem or has a quick fix solution
to it. I would appreciate any feedback anyone can give on
this. You can contact me via e-mail at the address listed
on this post. Thank You...

You now need to re-register Word.
From the Windows start > run box enter Winword /r and hit the enter key.
This will restore Word's file associations.
