A document has to be deleted each time Word is opened in order to use

This question would be much better located in an Office or Word
newsgroup; it is not XP based. Please post Word questions in the Word
newsgroup.
It sounds like at some point you opened the normal.dot template instead
of using it to open a new document, typed into it, and saved it.
Method 1: Will definitely work.
That said, use Windows Explorer to find and delete ALL occurrences of
normal.dot on the hard drive/s.
When you start Word, a new, clean normal.dot will be created for you.
NOTE: If you have saved any macros etc. in normal.dot, they will be gone
and need to be recreated again. The program itself will be fine, just
things you saved in normal.dot will go missing since it becomes a new,
virgin file.
Method 2: Another way to do it but you have to know how to open
normal.dot for editing.
The other possibility is to use Word to open the TEMPLATE normal.dot,
delete the junk information in it, and resave it as a TEMPLATE. Note I
said template, not document; it's very important.
