Is there such a thing a document repair utility that checks a file for errors?

I have Word closing on certain documents with multi-ligual text.
Is it possiblee I have problem with a perticular file?

Yes and yes...

Use the File > Open dialog. Select the document file with a single
click. Then click the down arrow next to the Open button and choose
"Open and Repair" from the popup menu.

Word documents do sometimes develop problems because of the way
they're constructed. It may or may not have anything to do with
multiple languages. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm.

Reinstalling Office will waste a few hours, but not achieve anything useful.
Repairing Word will achieve the same ends in a fraction of the time. The
problems with Word are rarely associated with the source code, but with the
personal stuff and that will not even be affected by a reinstall - and none
of it will help restore a corrupt document.

See http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm but documents do
occasionally corrupt. It is something you have to live with, aided by
occasionally backing up your work.

Thanks for the encouragement. I know installing is a fools errand.

Ok. I follow the instructions about removing temporary files. I used the DOS
prompt batch file. I then rescanned in Windows to be sure I got them all
(there were about 1000 of them before deleting).

Word still crashes but not like before. I give me a recover option and wants
to report the error. It also give me the file name that is sent in the error
report. I have this file backed up now. Is there someway to have someone look
at it to tell me what's up with Word?

thanks

If it is just the one file, it may simply be corrupt. Each time Word crashes
it will leave all that dross behind, so make sure you keep in top of the
temporary file problem in the working folders. I take it you amended the
batch file to match the folders on *your* system?

If you open Word in its safe mode (hold the CTRL key whilst starting) can
you open the offending document? If you can then copy all but the final
paragraph mark to a new document and save it with a new name (display the
paragraph marks with CTRL+*). Does that help?

If you attend to all the issues at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm and it is only the
one problematic document, there is probably nothing wrong with your
installation (attributable to Word).

If you want me to take a look at the document, zip it up and *provided the
resulting file is not larger than a couple of mb*, send it to the link on my
web site. I do not promise to be able to do anything with it if it is
corrupt.

I've sent the file to you. It's only 70k zipped (300K uncompressed).

I did change the drive letters and paths in the batch file. I also scanned
before and after the batch file to be sure that all temporary files were gone.

Trying to copy the contents of the files in question and paste them to
another "clean" document doesn't work because Word crashes before I can
manipulate the key stroke or mouse to highlight and copy.

Anyway thanks for any help you can provide.

I have checked the file and it opens without problem in Word 2007 and Word
2003 here. I hesitate to suggest what the problem might be. I have saved it
to a new document and returned it to you.

Dear lucycook, why are you answering a question exactly five years to
the day after it was previously answered?
