Is there any way to get rid of a password someone set up
on a document to protect it.? They forgot the password
and can I prevent them from doing it again?

Hi,

You can download a simple tool to unprotect/recover a lost or
forgotten Word document password here:

http://www.intertek.org.uk

I quote from a recent post which I hope may prove helpful to you...

Please do not attempt to access a file unless you are authorised to do
so.
