Word doc opens slowly when template not present

We have a series of templates used to create company
branded word documents.

When a document is created and sent to someone across the
WAN or with no access to the template directory the
document opens very slowly.

Small and very simple 35kb documents can take up to 2
minutes. This is making our Australian friends very
annoyed.

From what I have read this is because the document has a
reference to the template that created it.

Is there any way to prevent this reference from being
saved - or to get the remote computer to ignore the
template on opening.

No. But you could conceivably have a macro that links the
document to Normal.dot (which is the global template EVERY
installation of Word will have and be able to find). A good
idea might be to have a button on the toolbar, next to the
regular Save button, that the user can click when he knows
he's going to be sending the document out.
