Word doc links on Intranet page

I recently created some links on our company's intranet site to Word
templates on our network (using HTML). When I test the links on my computer,
they open Word and a new document from the template is created (exactly what
I want to happen). However, on other user's computers, when they click the
links, the actual template opens in the Internet Explorer browser, not Word.
Any ideas as to why that's happening? Thanks.
