Anything that is a *.doc file will no longer open in IE.
This is happening on two machines here at work, and we are
perplexed.

O/S Windows 2000
IE v6 SP1
Office 97

When you select the link, it opens another window with
just a red "X" in the upper left hand side. As it opens
the status bar says "installing components". Which
components I am not sure. Both machines will open up
excel spreadsheets in IE just fine.

I tried a work around that should have forced the doc to
open up in Word, instead of IE, but that did not work.
The work around was tested on another machine and was
working fine on it.

The work around I used:
* Open My Computer.
* On the Tools menu (or the View menu), click Folder
Options (or click Options).
* Click the File Types tab.
* In the Registered file types list, click the specific
Office document type (for example, Microsoft Excel
Worksheet), and then click Advanced (or click Edit).
* In the Edit File Type dialog box, click to clear the
Browse in same window check box (or click to clear the
Open Web documents in place check box).
* Click OK.

I even tried to save the *.doc file to the desktop and
select IE to open it. No luck. Same blank window with
the red "x".

Another oddity is that the javascript buttons, which are
showing up on every other machine nicely spaced apart,
were squashed up against one another on these same two
problematic computers.

Ack. Help???

In your "work around" try assigning it to open with the
MS Word 97 program instead of IE, using the Change button
instead of the Advanced button.

Is the X a big or small X? If it's a little square
surrounding a rex X, that means a image could not be
displayed.

Good luck
