Word deletes as it inserts

All of a sudden when I am trying to insert some text in the middle of
a document, the text I am inserting is deleting what is already there.
Instead of inserting, it is over-writing. I must have hit a special
key to change this and not even been aware of it. On my old computer
I just had to hit the "insert" key and it was all fixed, but on my new
laptop, there is no "insert" key, so what do I do? Thanks!

Double-click on the OVR in the status bar at the bottom. Otherwise, Tools >
Options > Edit and uncheck the "Overtype mode" option.

Click the OVR indicator on the status bar at the bottom of the Word screen.
Are you sure there is no INS key? I have never seen a keyboard without one.

Forgive me for laughing ralgam but this can be very annoying to a newcomer.
I remember tearing my hair out at this. Next time it happens try pressing
the INSERT key. Using that key toggles you through the overwrite function.

You obviously didn't read ralgam's message; his problem is not in not
knowing the solution but in the deficiency of his laptop, which has no
Insert key.
