Word crashing consistently

Tommy

Hi, we've been having a problem with a user running WinXP pro with
office XP pro SP3.

Essentially, if he opens up a new word session and clicks the bullets
and numbering button, the application crashes and closes. Also, we
have custom templates (dot files) that we created for our business
documents and whenever he opens this template to create a new file, he
is unable to open the style and formatting pane. If he does attempt to
open it, Word crashes in the same way.

We tried uninstalling office and reinstalling. Nothing changed.
We tried renaming the Normal.dot file to have it recreate a new one,
and once again, nothing happened.

We also noticed that this problem only occurs on his profile. If I log
into his computer with my account, everything is fine, and I can open
up all the panes.

Anyway, I hope you can help me out here. I looked on MS website and
couldn't find anything in the knowledge base or their hotfixes.

Thanks a lot,
Marc

Problems with dialogs such as Bullets and Numbering, Style, Font, Paragraph,
Page Setup, Symbol, and Print often indicate a damaged printer driver. Try
deleting and reinstalling the printer.

G'Day Tommy,

You might investigate whether Show/Hide All (¶ on the toolbar)
and the Font he is using are contributors, however the "nothing"
that changed and happened would suggest that Office Xp is
not the problem!

If you DO uninstall Office again Delete the Folder Structure -
a number of settings files are left lying around.

I suggest that you focus on Windows Xp. You do not say if SP1
and other updates are installed.

Check for problems with Fonts.

As Suzanne has already suggested, update the printer driver.

Stop then Restart the Spooler, to clear the Spoolfile.

If Necessary Uninstall the Printer and Reinstall it.

Consider scheduling "chkdsk C: /r", followed by a defrag.

This could also be caused by some corruption in the Registry.

In the Registry Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\List Gallery Presets

and delete/rename the Gallery Presets key.

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should review "Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the Registry Help.

In this situation you may also want to use the Registry/Export Registry file command and export your selected branch. That way if you find the change wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can merge the
deleted branch back to to the Registry by double-clicking the resulting file.
