word completion

When I start typing in say Google it immediately presents me with a number
of possiblities that start with the same letters, from sites I visited
before.

How can I disable that?

Try the following and see if it helps:

How to turn off Autocomplete in XP

Go to Tools>Internent Options>Content>click Autocomplete button
Click the Clear Forms button
Click OK and OK out
Close IE
Reboot your computer

Scroll down to line 37, on the right hand side, click on the *Disabled*
selection and when the dialog box appears click on the Save, and save the
file to a folder where you will know where to find it. Then go to the
folder and double click on the file to run it. It should disable the
AutoComplete function.

Tools>Internet Options>Content Tab>Auto Complete. Remove the
check in Web Addresses and click Clear Forms to remove what
is currently saved.
