word cannot open existing files, they are not available.

just got computer with office pre-loaded. Created new word document, saved
it, closed word, cancled out of the saving a normal template and when
reopening word program, it shows me the document I created. I can open it
with notepad, but not the word program. When trying to open with the word
program it says file not available.
