Word appears on taskbar, but no window

That's pretty much what happens. Doesn't matter if I double-click a Word
file or start it manually. The splash screen appears for the usual half
second or so, and the button appears on the task bar, but no window. It
responds to a right click on the taskbar button, but maximize, restore don't
help. It can be closed there. All other apps working normally, including
Office programs. I've rebooted, chanted, cursed, and all the other things
that usually fix these things, but no joy.

Are you sure Maximize doesn't work? Usually in this situation the problem is
that the window has opened offscreen. If, when you right-click, the
available options include Maximize and Minimize but not Restore, then that's
what's happening? To correct the problem, open any other window, then
right-click on an empty area of the Taskbar and choose Cascade. This should
bring the Word window back in view. Use the mouse to move and size it to
your preference, then quit Word. When you restart Word, the window should be
where you left it.

Suzanne and Garfield,

Heh heh. It was off-screen all right. I don't usually have the other
monitor on, and that's where Word decided to put its screen this time. VERY
sheepish grin. <vsg>

By the way, where is normal.dot? A search for this file on the whole drive
didn't find it.

In Windows XP, Word's user templates folder is a hidden folder, so you have
to have the Windows Folder Options set to display hidden files and folders;
otherwise even a Search won't find it.

I'd done that. I could see folders like application data. It turns out
that you have to tell Search you want hidden folders -- it doesn't seem to
pick it up from Folder options. All is well now. Thanks a bunch.

Ah, thanks for the feedback. I'm running Windows 2000, so I'm not really
familiar with XP.
