Word and XP

I am having trouble running word in xp
every 5 minutes or so it says that it has a serious error and closes, and sometimes the computer just turns off, not shutting down. I have done a scna for viruses and i get none, however it is not up to date. Is this a virus or a bug??? and how can i fix it, im debating whether to wipe it and start again
 
Hi,

Start/run eventvwr.msc and look for clues. If none exist, then you may have
an overheating problem.
