how do I get my old word and excel documents to work on
my new windows xp works program? why dont they convert
over?
MS Works is, in a sense, "baby Office." It is a suite of scaled down
applications - effective and efficient but not nearly as full featured as
the MS Office programs. Word and Excel are part of the MS Office
collection. The documents produced by these application are more complex
than the documents produced by Works.
While Works can open some of the documents produced by much older versions
of Office, it can only do this if the filters and converters are installed.

Depending on what version of Word and Excel was used to create your old
files, Works may not be capable of opening the files even with the
converters and filters available. You should be able to download and
install Word and Excel Viewers. While you cannot edit files opened with the
Viewer, you could copy/paste data into a Works based file.
