Word and Excel versus Microsoft Works

I have Microsoft Windows XP on my laptop, what happened to
Microsoft Word and where is Excell? Most people don't know
what Microsoft Works is and neither do I. Is this a cheap
version of word. I would like to get Word and Excel, do I
just get the software, can anyone tell me what is best.
Thanks

Works is a poor man's version of office suite

I guess you are wondering where MS Money and Encarta are too.. you have to
buy them unless the computer vendor was offering a software bundle..

MS Works is an integrated 'office' suite which is ok for some, but can prove
to be a little restrictive as the user becomes more advanced..

MS Office is the best way to go really, but it does cost more..

Surprisingly to some maybe, a search in Google presented this link right at
the top of the list on search page 1.. I have done all of the hard work for
you..

You could try doing the same if you feel the need to look at MS Office
solutions..

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.

Some suppliers do preinstall either Works or Office and it appears
Gateway is one of them. Windows itself doesn't come with either Works or
Office as standard.
Just FYI.

Sure. Many OEM vendors bundle additional applications with the
computers they sell, for an extra charge. That doesn't make those
applications part of the OS, however.
