Word 97 -> Word 2002

Hi. Just got a new Pentium 4 XP Pro machine. Just started using Word 2002
and have some questions. Was hoping someone in this newsgroup could help.

Background: I have some online manuals are offered in two versions, txt and
htm. For the txt file, 'print to file', 'Generic/Text Only'. For the htm
file, 'Save As' html.

Question one: I keep the manuals in courier 12 pitch (closest match to txt
output). One problem I've always had is working with single quotes. The
Generic/Text only driver will take those forward slash/backslash single
quotes and turn them into high-bit garbage characters. Now I can find a
straight up/down single quote and do a [ctrl]-[C]. I can do a find on a bad
single quote and [ctrl]-[V] to replace it. But if I try a find/replace all,
the 'replace all' uses the same bad single quote. Question. How do I get a
'replace all' to use a good straight up/down single quote?

Question two: On my Word97, when I 'Save As' a html file, my TOC is
converted to hyperlinks to the TOC headers. On Word 2002 I see the bookmark
tags on the TOC headers, but the TOC itself does not change. Why? What's
the point of having bookmarks if you have no way of reaching them?

Question three: Been a couple of times where I couldn't launch Word 2002.
Runtime error. I believe it's due to a reference to a file that no longer
exists (running my Norton Systemworks and removing bad shortcuts seems to
fix the problem). Question. If I launched Word 2002 in safemode, is there
a way to detect/remove bad links?

Any advice would be appreciated...Dennis
 
Q1: Firstly, go to your AutoCorrect settings under the
Tools menu. Select the AutoFormat tab and then deselect
the "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" option. Now do
your search and replace.

Q2: When inserting your TOC, tick the "Use hyperlinks
instead of page numbers" option.

Q3: An error with Word..? unheard off! :-) sorry, best
suggestion is to make sure you've got the latest service
packs and if that doesn't help, do a search for your
specific error on the MS knowledgebase
(http://support.microsoft.com/).

Found the runtime problem. Listed as a close problem, but same thing. Had
to control panel->remove the 'works suite addon for word'...Dennis
