Word 97 Compatability

I am using Word 97 and I get the message that my document is already in use - do I want to make a copy? I also can't use my spell checker in Outlook Express and get similar error messages in Excel. Will upgrading to a newer version of Office correct these problems?
 
Office 97 works on XP. You may need to either repair install it or
un-install and re-install it. The only thing that doesn't work, "right out
of the box", is spell checker. There is a download that fixes that. You can
find it with a Google search.
