Did you perhaps type three or more asterisks in an otherwise empty paragraph
and then press Enter? If so, the AutoFormat As You Type feature converted
that into a paragraph border on the preceding paragraph.

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm for an
explanation. Because that article was written for Word 2003 and earlier,
you'll need the following translation:

- The Borders button with its down arrow is located on the Home ribbon, in
the lower right corner of the Paragraph group. The command to open the
Borders and Shading dialog is at the bottom of the dropdown when you click
that arrow, if you prefer to use the dialog (it's easier to click None in
the dropdown).

- To get to the AutoCorrect Options dialog and its AutoFormat As You Type
tab, go to Office button > Word Options > Proofing and click the AutoCorrect
Options button at the top.
