I am running Vista Home Premium 64 on a Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 GHz with 4 GB
Ram.

Recently upgraded from Office 2000 to 2007.

I can open Word 2007 and open my document without any problems. But when I
change the active windows and come back to Word, Word is extermely slow. The
hourglass comes on for a good 8 to 10 seconds. I have to wait and cannot do
anything. The CPU usage jumps by 25% during the wait time

While I have a few applications such as Outlook and Excel open, I am not
running any major applications.

This is very frustrating.

Help!!!!!!!!!!

Please test this with Word in Safe Mode. From Start | Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter which starts Word in Safe Mode. Open a document and work as
normal. Then try switching between applications again and see if the problem
persists.

Hi Terry,

I typed winword /a from the command prompt (ie c:\windows\system32>) and I
get the following error message:

"winword" is not recongized as an internal or external command, operable
porgram or batch file.

Who mentioned a command prompt? Read the instruction again. It is very
simple to follow. If you don't see Run from the Start menu, then someone has
removed it. Try Winkey+R instead.

tf

I did not have RUN on my START menu.

I tried the Winkey+R and typed winword /a in the RUN window. It worked Word
now runs properly and no slow downs.

Does this mean I always have to run in Safe Mode? How can I get it to run
fast in regulr mode?

Thanks for your help.

If you look at Taskbar options, adding the Run command is an option (though
it is normally there by default).

Running in Safe Mode is a test to see if Word is the problem or something
else. In Safe Mode, Word starts in its default install condition bypassing
every customisation, add-in, template, macro, etc.

So we have now proved that there is nothing wrong with Word. You need to
check out any of the following that may be causing the problem:

Incompatible or partially corrupt printer driver
Corrupt normal.dot
Incompatible third party add-in (either as a template, Comm or macro add-in)

See the FAQ at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm
for some guidance on finding the problem.

I renamed my Normal.dotm and that did not improve performance.
I cleaned the registery and again that did not improve performance.

I checked for Add-ins. I have an Add-in under COM Add-Ins. I've tried
removing this Add-In, but when I try to remove it I get the following error
message "The connected state of Office Add-Ins registered in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed."

How are you trying to remove the add-in?

Have you tried the printer driver yet?

Terry

I am not on a network and the printer driver is installed locally.

I tried removing the Add-in by going to the Office Button --> Word
Options --> Add-Ins --> Manage COM Add-Ins --> Selecting the Add-In from the
list of available Add-Ins and clicking remove.

I would imagine that that only unloads it for the current Word session. To
actually remove it you would have to uninstall it or disable the add-in
option of the application (with Word closed).

As Suzanne says. Plus, I still feel the printer/printer driver could be at
fault - especially as it is a networked printer.

Terry

What add-in is it? Many add-ins are templates placed in the Word Startup
folder. Simply removing the template from the Startup folder is sufficient
to test.

To eliminate the printer, install the Generic Text driver through the Add
Printers dialog and set it as the Windows Default printer.

Terry

the add-in is for "eXPertPDFAddIn-4Class". It is a PDF editor.

I had already checked the Word Startup folder and it is empty.

Uninstall the PDF utility from the Control Panel. Then open Word and make
sure that the Addin has also been removed. Then test Word again.

Terry

Removing the PDF editor did it.

thanks for all you help Terry.

Looks like I have to find another PDF editor that does not conflict with
Word.

Word 2007 has a free PDF add-in that allows you to SaveAs PDF, but it
doesn't let you open and edit PDFs. For that function, you need a third
party editor. But have you checked with eXPertPDFAddIn to see if they have
an up[date or solution to the problem?

Terry

I am using Bullzip PDF Printer for creating PDFs, which still works.

I was using eXPertPDF for editing (adding and removing pages, adding
comments). I got the software through "Give Away of The Day", which let's
you donwload and install the software for free for one day and it is
unsupported. Now that I have removed it, I've lost it and can't install it
again.

I have to find another PFD editor.

There are many alternatives to the grossly expensive Adobe PDF Creator.
Amongst the better editors are Foxit, Cute and PDFedit995 to name just three
that I have used. But there are dozens and dozens to choose from.

How can I remove the Add-in with Word closed?
