Word 2007 links to Excel break unexpectedly

I am using Word 2007 to generate financial statements and related footnotes.
I have the actual financial statements built in Excel and use Paste Special
place them into Word as a linked object. I also created ranges in Excel in
an attempt to create dynamic references in Word. However, when I open the
Word file, the links have all converted to a Picture in Word - no links! At
first this was an intermittent problem, but now it happens everytime I open
the file.

Any tips or suggestions are most welcome!

What do you see if you toggle on the display of field codes with Alt+F9

When the links are working, I see the address of the linked Excel file tabs,
when the links are not working (i.e. Word shows my tables as Pictures) Alt+F9
doesn't show anything.

Do you think my problem would have anything to do with using Track Changes?
I noticed the unexpected breaks started to happen more frequently once I
started tracking changes in the Word document. Although I just did a quick
test, saving a copy of my file with track changes on and one with them off
and the links worked in both, which is great, but confusing!

Any ideas?

In that case, either the tables were not pasted as links, or the links have
been selected and then unlinked, using Ctrl+Shift+F9

I am the only user of this file and the Excel tables were pasted as links
using Paste Special->Paste Link->Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet Object. I
wouldn't have known about Ctrl+Shift+F9 to unlink them nor had I gone through
the menu path to break the links. Do you have any other suggestions?

What about my question re: tracking changes? I know that if I don't turn
track changes off before I close the file I will get multiple iterations of
my tables when I reopen the file and view marked changes.

Thanks!
