Word 2007 - how do I update cross-references with no TOC or Index

I have a document which has numerous cross-references, but no TOC or Index.
In older versions of word there was a way to update the fields, but it seems
to have disappeared or moved in Word 2007. Does anyone know how to update the
fields without a TOC or index in Word 2007?

Do ctrl+A to select the whole document, then press F9.

Switching to Print Preview and then back to your favorite view would also
work.
