Does anyone know whether Word 2003 allows creation/editing
of SGML files? I know it handles XML, but have been unable
to locate any information on SGML capabilities associated
with this application.

Thanks!

Word (any version) isn't set up for doing SGML, specifically.
But you could use it for that as long as you're willing to
type in the tags (or use macros or AutoText to do so). You'd
have to save/open the files as "plain text".

Thank you Cindy. How would you suggest the use of macros
to do this? Would there be a way to impose DTD rules
against such a file for real-time validation?

Since I'm not really familiar with SGML, I really can't
give you any concrete ideas. I just know what using Word to
do HTML and XML is like :-) I set up a template once for
editing my website pages that will insert pairs of tags,
for instance.

I doubt very much that you could do real-time validation,
even making use of Word events. There's no way to make them
trigger "as you type". And the whole validation thing would
have to be programmed in from scratch.

I have to assume there are tools already out there that
support what you're looking for :-)? If it's a question of
whether to pay out to buy one vs. using Word, I'd say
you'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration by just
buying it.
