We have existing Word 2002 documents with drop-down form fields and whe
you used to protect the document these dropdowns would start workin
(ie can select from them rather than edit them). Now we have Offic
2003 and I can't figure out how you protect the document so that thes
dropdowns become enabled. It seems that it locks the whole documen
whereas before it only locked a section

From the Tools menu, select Protect Document, go to Section 2. Editing
Restrictions of the Protect Document pane, and check the "Allow only this
type of editing in the document:" box and select "Filling in forms" from the
pulldown. If your document contains multiple sections, a "Select Sections"
link will appear in the Protect Document pane. If you click on that link,
you will be able to specify the sections that you want to protect.

thanks for reply, I tried that and now I have the dropdown box working
fine but I can't type anywhere else on the document, ie it's
restricting usage to the dropdown and nothing else. This is our headed
paper so we need to type on it!

can you help again?

If you use a newsgroup portal that updates posts real-time then you
would see Doug's reply. :-)

ExcelTips.com and WordTips.com slurp the newsfeeds from the newsgroups
and unfortunately there is quite a delay in how they are synced (if
they are ever actually in sync).

If you have Outlook Express and are able to access newsgroups then
click this link and it will start OE and add this newsgroup for you:

To subscribe to other newsgroups go to Tools/Newsgroups to obtain a
full list.

That's the whole purpose of forms: the user can ONLY write in the specified
form fields. Otherwise what would be the point of form fields?
