Can someone please tell me why my Word 2003 takes over 30 seconds to launch
on a fast new Dell computer? It seems to be waiting for something on my
small peer to peer network, or maybe Internet, because it launches fast if I
disable the computer's network adaptor.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Robert

I have same/similar experience. Word 2003 on new Machine running Win XP. I think I see this delay even if I am not connected to network or internet. Any option to speed up Word 2003 loading first time?

Also, are there any options to disable virus scan prior to opening a document? Opening a word doc also takes additional time, but it says "virus scan is running".

One thing that can slow Word down (and cause it to hang if you're *not*
connected to the network) is having a network printer set as the default
without a driver installed locally. If you are using a network printer, be
sure to install the driver locally and point it to the network. Another
problem could be having templates or add-ins on the network, in particular
Normal.dot, which should always be local (and personal for each user).

Apparently it was Norton AV. After turning off the MS Office plugin, the
problem went away.
Thanks, Robert
