Word 2003 inserting characters does not function

I initiated a new doc in Word 2003. After having written two words, I tried
to go back and insert a new word in between those two. Unlike what is
usual, this new word did not push the other word off to the right, but 'ate'
character for character. How come ?

Tried to find a solution in help, but what keyword can be used in such a
case ?
 
Knut,
It is possible that you pressed the Insert key, which becomes an overwrite
key. Press Insert again and hopefully the problem will be corrected.
