Word 2003 e-mail template gives wrong line breaks

Hi, I'm using Outlook 2003 with Word as my e-mail editor. Before, without
word, when I pressed return I got an HTML return = 2 line breaks (a
paragraph break) like this:

But now with Word, I only get 1 line break like this:
The problem with this is that when I type what I think is a paragraph break
by pressing return twice, on certain e-mail viewers such as Hotmail, it
appears I've pressed return four times. E.g. I type this:

"Dear Sir

You are silly.

Yours sincerely"

....but it arrives in Hotmail like this...

"Dear Sir

You are silly.

Yours sincerely"

Then I look silly! Basically Word e-mail is using the 'Normal' style,
whereas I need it to use the in-built 'Normal (Web)' style so it appears
correctly on other HTML e-mail programs that expect paragraph breaks. How
can I make it do this by default?

Hi Sue

Not sure if you read my message properly, but I'm having this problem with
Word as the e-mail editor.

If I do as you said and open Word>Format>Paragraph, it displays 0 spacing
after. However if I change that to 12, it doesn't affect e-mails. Even if
I save Normal.dot with a space after, it doesn't affect e-mails.

Basically I want to set the default 'Style' for e-mails so it uses "Normal
(Web)" which is a preset style in Word as e-mail editor, only it isn't used
by default but should be for HTML messages.

Is there a .dot file for e-mails or something I can modify?

See my 1/31 response to your earlier post. (HINT: check paragraph format
settings)

Not sure what version of Word you are using, but in Word 2003, under the
General tab in the File New dialog, there is an Email Message template.

On my system however where I have the paragraphs in my Normal style defined
with 12 pts after them, when I press enter in a "document" created by that
template, it leaves an empty line between the paragraphs. If I remove the
12pts spacing after the paragraph in the normal style definition, pressing
return does not result in an empty line after the paragraph.

So I back up the information that Sue has provided.

Sorry guys but either I've lost my grasp of English, or you're not reading
what I actually am asking. Can we try one more time please? :)

Sue, you said:
"Check your paragraph spacing options in Word -- Format | Paragraph"

When I do this, I can indeed change it from 0pt to 12pt spacing after each
paragraph. This however has no effect whatsoever on the default Word E-mail
template, so is of no use to my query. I am sure you know that changing
settings in Word doesn't amend the E-mail Message template itself, which I
cannot seem to locate or edit in Word.

Doug, you said:
"in Word 2003, under the General tab in the File New dialog, there is an

defined with 12 pts after them, when I press enter in a "document" created

I am talking about Word as the E-mail editor. You are talking about Word
for "documents". These behave in very different ways. I have tried editing
the Normal.dot and Normal style so they are defined as you say, but this has
no bearing whatsoever on new e-mails in Word.

To summarise:

1) There is no way to edit the Email Message template that you see in
File>New>General. Where is it stored? This was my original question and
hasn't been answered.

2) Any changes I make to Normal.dot or the Normal style are not carried
over to my e-mails using Word as the e-mail editor. This is because when I
look at the style the e-mail is using, it is not using 'Normal' or 'Normal
(Web)', but 'Trebuchet MS, 10 pt'.

3) Basically I want to set all Word E-mails to use the built-in style
'Normal (Web)' by default. This has a line break after each paragraph not
of '12 pt' but of 'Auto'. Currently they do not use 'Normal (Web)'. How
can I make them do so?

Sue and Doug, detailed solutions still welcome. I hope you understand the
question now ;)

I'm out. I don't and would never consider using Word as the email editor.

Update: My solution below only works for new messages. Replies still suffer
from the same problem. Will post a new thread clarifying the issue.
