Maybe what I did can help others. In Vista Home Premium I installed Office
2000: Word, Excel, Powerpoint. I did not install Outlook 2000, but instead
converted Outlook's contacts, mail and calendar to use them in Windows
Contacts, Windows Mail and Windows Calendar. (There are ways to get Outlook
2000 to work in Vista, but I chose to use the newer Windows apps instead.)
I installed SR-1a and SP3, plus various Office security updates.Word, Excel,
and Powerpoint 2000 apps work fine.
Office help did not always work. So, in Windows Explorer I went to Program
Files\Microsoft Office 2000\Office\1033\ right-click MSOHELP.EXE >
Properties > Compatibility: selected "Run this proram in compatibility mode
for Windows XP.
Context help (Help >What's This > use question mark cursor to click on a
menu command) gave errors "The Help for this program was created in Windows
Help format, which depends on a feature that is not included in Windows
Vista".
MS offers download of WinHlp32.exe to run old .hlp files, so I downloaded
and installed the package Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu and now the context
help also works.
