I need to reconstruct a specific setting that was manually
destroyed. Currently the PC is unable to open an .rtf
file. If someone else is using Word2000 on Windows98SE,
please retrieve correct setting for me to "save my bacon".
Thank you.

Windows Explorer
Tools, Folder Options, File Types
scroll to "Rich Text Format", highlight, Edit
- I believe Word2000 sets to ".doc", not ".rtf" ...?
please confirm.
in "Actions:" highlight "Open", Edit
- All 5 textareas in this window have been tampered.
Please retrieve settings for me for:
Application used to perform action: ?
Use DDE: was unchecked and rechecked, clearing contents ...

Many thanks to Mark Tangard, who very kindly provided by
email the needed settings, reproduced below for anyone
else who needs the advice. (He is indeed MVP)

Hope this helps. I've never understood half these quirky
settings, and I occasionally get a violent error on this
Win98 machine (only) (not on my WinXP machine) when I just
double-click a .DOC or .RTF file, claiming the file can't
be found and suggesting that "required libraries" may not
be available. The only fix I've found for this is to
*delete* the file association for those types, reboot,
reregister Word (officepath\winword /r) and reboot again.
