Word 2000: Multiple Windows

Why does Word 2000 show each document as a separate instance of Word on the tool bar. When I have 5 documents open and close out of Word I have to close each window individually. In 97 all the Word windows closed when I exited Word. It is time consuming. Also, Word is no longer closing Excel files that I have a open hyperlink to when I close the master Word file.
