O

Oldun

I was testing many fonts to see if I liked a particular font.

Now my list of fonts in the drop down needs to be reduced to only 3 or 4.

How can I accomplish this?

Many thanks to all who reply.

Suzanne,
Yes, many fonts are necessary. 8^)

But I am attempting to communicate about something I do not know the correct
terminology of.
Please bear with a old man.

Open word. In the task bar where you see Normal then Font 'Times New Roman'
that is normally used.
Click on the down arrow and a drop down listing of fonts appears.

There are a group of fonts recently used (3 or 4) and below that list a
double line, where all fonts
are listed.

I want to reduce the list of fonts immediately at the top that has grown due
to my trial and error
in looking at some of the main list.

Golly, but am not sure if I am clear enough.

Please advise. 8^)

This MRU (most recently used) list can, I think, be cleared by hacking the
Registry (which you probably don't want to do). You can also replace the
trial-and-error fonts with more frequently used fonts just by reselecting
them. How the list behaves depends on the version of Word; some versions
clear it every time you quit Word (except for TNR, Arial, and Courier New,
which are always listed); other versions preserve the existing list. In Word
2002/2003, there seems to be a limit of 10 fonts in the list, so it will not
grow beyond that, but I don't believe there's any way to reduce the list
other than, as I say, deleting the Registry key where it is stored (and I
don't offhand know which one that is).

Hi Oldun,

You can use the tools in the Word 2002 Support.dot template to reset the font MRU (most recently used) listing as described here:

Hi Bob,
Seems that I do not have the Support.dot template in the Office 10 folder.
Did a search with no results.
Followed the instructions in the url below and still no Support Template.
Do not understand as I had to place the #1 disk in my CDRom drive and???

Would deleting the Normal.dot and restarting my template again cure the
problem?

Hi Oldun,

You can use the tools in the Word 2002 Support.dot template to reset the
font MRU (most recently used) listing as described here:

You'll need to rerun Setup (Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs) to
Add/Remove Components and install the last-listed batch of templates, which
includes the Support.dot template.

Hi, Oldun,

If you get tired of chasing Support.dot <g>, there's another way to
tackle the job. You can create two tiny files, one that will write the
registry entry to turn off the Font MRU list and one that will turn it
on. This is the same job that Support.dot's macro would do.

Open Notepad, and copy/paste the following text into the blank
document (don't include the dashes that set off the text here):

----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options]
"NoFontMRUList"="1"

----------

Save this in any convenient folder, using the filename
FileMRU_Off.reg. Then open another blank document in Notepad, and
copy/paste the following text into it:

----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options]
"NoFontMRUList"="0"

----------

Save this one in the same folder, using the filename FileMRU_On.reg.

To clear the font list, use Explorer to go to the folder and
double-click FileMRU_Off.reg. Restart Word, and the entire MRU will be
gone -- just the regular font list will remain, and when you use other
fonts they won't appear in the MRU. Then double-click the
FileMRU_On.reg file, and restart Word again. The MRU still won't
appear at first, but each font you use will be added to it.

Hi Jay,

He He He ! So easy to turn and off. 8^)

Many sincere thanks to you and Suzanne for assisting this 74 year old. 8^)
