The startup stalls, with the message "Windows could not
start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
system32\ntoskrnl.exe" Please reinstall.

How? If I get to the DS prompt via XP resore, I haave no
control over the CD drive. If I use a windows 95 disk, I
can get to the CD drive.

What commands do I use to obtain the file? Can I get that
file from the XP disk?

Thannk you.

You need to navigate to the i386 directory. At the command prompt type:
'expand ntkrnlmp.ex_C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

This is the normal procedure using recovery console from the Win XP CD. If
you use a win 98 floppy and boot to the dos prompt with cd driver support i
would imagine that you can achieve the same result.
