Help please. W2000SP4 & Rollup1. After a lot of problems with GDI+ (which I
had never heard of) solved that by sticking relevant dll in C:\WINNT\System
32 it installed happily removing at the same time the Antispyware beta1.
Thought we were there but clicking on the little castle icon in
Start/Programs it gives this error message. "0x800106ba A problem caused
Windows Defender to stop". Tried Control Panel/Add/Removeand change option
but to no avail. You would have thought this would be easy but it is a bit of
a mess as I see from other questions. Thanks in advance

This error code usually means that the defender service is not running. try
"net start windefend" and let us know how it goes....you may want to check
the eventlogs on why theservice didn't start, etc....

Ravi, thanks for reply but I am afraid I have no clue as to the meaning of
net start windefend. The event logs simply say Info> WinDefend changed. But
that means nothing to me. Yes it has changed in the times of trying to get it
installed and then the damn thing does not work. Thanks

Ravi, thanks that was quick
Do not seem to be able to copy paste from Cmd.exe but here goes
The Windows Defender Service is Starting
The Windows Defender Service could not be started
A system error has occurred
System error 1747 has occurred
The authentication service is unknown

Sorry does not mean anything to me. The Antispy beta 1 worked brilliantly.
It seems from the various messages this one is a bit iffy. By the way the
GDI+ installation with the GDI+ download said do not put the dll in system
file but in fact it only seems to work ie install if in C:\WIINT\System 32.
So could this be an issue ?

Thanks Ravi sorry to be a pain.

that error means that the defender service was unable to the NTLM security
service provider on your system to authenticate its callers. I do not know
if you have explicitly stopped that provider or did something else to your
system that resulted it in getting to this state. Sorry, can't be of more
help....

hi ravi ,

i tried - Start -> run -> cmd.exe -> type "net start windefend"

i am getting following message
The Windows Defender Service service is starting.
The Windows Defender Service service could not be started.

A system error has occurred.

System error 2 has occurred.

The system cannot find the file specified.

Just so you know bcwinch's problem is not unique, my experience has been just
like bcwinch's -- error 0x800106ba and no clue where to go from there. Only
difference is, I get the error immediately after installation when the app
tries to initialize. I'm also using up-to-date Win2k pro.

I have a similar problem, and by following the advice from Ravi I have
managed to start the Defender manually through run > cmd.exe > net start
windefend. However, having done this I am told the definitions are 23 days
old. I then click to update and receive confirmation message, but the 23
days old warning remains.

By some means or another, Defender now starts with everything else at Start
Up. However, I now have the problem with the update notification which I
cannot seem to cure. Essentially, the notificiation is that the updates are
24 days old. When I click to update, the small icon in the tray responds
with a message to say it is connecting to check, and then another message to
say it is up to date. However, the warning message of being 24 days out of
date remains? Any suggestions?

Make sure the Client for Microsoft Windows is installe din networking and the
Workstation service is started. That solved it for me.

Rych - later in this thread, avers that installing the Microsoft Client for
Windows networking and making sure the workstation service is started, fixed
this error message for him--so those are two details I'd check.

I've been unable to replicate by just shutting down the workstation service,
and I was too chicken to remove the Microsoft Client.....

Have you checked the two details Rych mentions? Workstation service
started, and Microsoft Client for Windows Networks in place?

Do you get any error message about updates? Go to help, about, and hit
check for updates.

Try WindowsUpdate. Are you offered updates?

Are you on a managed network with at WSUS server in place? If so, the new
class of updates for Windows Defender signatures needs to be authorized by
the admin of the WSUS server.

I have the same error Error 0x800106ba and tried to run it manually with the
command "net start windefend". I got the following answer:
The Windows Defender Service is starting
The Windows Defender Service could not be started.
A system error has occured.
System error 265 has occured
The system cannot find message text for message number 0x109 in the message
file for BASE.

Any idea of what I shall do ?

The event log also said "A certificate chain processed correctly, but
terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider"

Thanks for you help.

Is Client for Microsoft Networks installed, in networking? Is the

Simple solution to annoying problem

Firstly just go to windows website and grab a copy of the latest windows defender and install it.

Once installed there is a strong chance that u will have the message that windows defender is out of date and to make matters worse the "check for updates" sign might be disabled. For this, exit windows defender and restart it. If that doesnt work then do the following >

Start>Run>"wuaucpl.cpl"> Turn on the automatic updates.

Now restart windows defender, update and its done !!

Enjoy !!

Very simple solution instead of all of these complex methods >.>

hit "windows run" or go to you start menu and hit run. Type in "Services.msc"

Scroll down to "Windows Defender", and right click it.

Scroll down to "Properties"

In the first tab, switch it's start-up type to "Automatic"

There ya go, all done =D
