You'll want to create an account (in Users and Passwords) on the Win2k
machine(s) with the username and password that you use to logon to the win9x
machine(s) with. Then you'll need to share out the resource(s) with
permissions for those users. Also make sure they're all part of the same
workgroup. Then you'll no longer be prompted for the IPC$ password
Inter-process communication)

In a peer level workgroup, when you try to access resources on a Windows
2000 machine, Windows 2000 needs to authenticate the user. If the user
account doesn't exist in it's local account database, then access will be
denied.

I have never understood the whole IPC$ thing. Could you
enlighten me on the concept behind this? What is it for,
other than confusing someone who is trying to network
their computer to a Win2K machine?

Interprocess communication (IPC$) is a remote procedure call requesting for
valid credentials with the "right" to access the share. Not to be confused
with "permissions" which are controlled by ACL Lists.

Since W2K doesn't support anonymous logons by default, you need to specify
an account that both exists on the target and has the right to connect to
target through the network. Note that the guest account is disabled by
default on W2K. A domain extends this security to participating nt computer
accounts (via SIDs again).

W2K is a user-level operating system, unlike Win9x, it enforces security by
relying on account SIDs and controlling both rights and permissions to it's
resources. As far as rights are concerned, IPC$s are transparent to a valid
user when connecting to a W2K target.
