won't scan hard disc

First time here, my computer has just started this...

When I attempt to do maintenace "scan hard disc drive"
it will run few seconds and the gauge moves a little, but
then it does not move any further. Its not scanning my
hard disc. Have no idea why this is happening. Also
starting to freeze up frequently. HELPPPPPPPPPPP
