We upgraded to Windows 2000 in January. Ever since then
our workstations will not power down at shut down. We
just get the message "it is now safe to turn off your
computer". Where is the setting to turn this feature on?
It worked fine with Windows 98.

Read the motherboard manual. If the computer is so capable, then there
should be a bios setup configuration that enables it. Could be related to
APM or ACPI.

It's not a "setting" issue, it's related to the Hardware Abstraction Layer
the OS is using. If you install W2K with the Standard Hardware Abstraction
Layer, as opposed to the ACPI layer, you'll get what u see.

Win98 is not W2K, for the later to shutdown the PC without prompt, the
hardware needs to be ACPI compliant and the OS needs to be installed with
the ACPI HAL.

Try going to Control Panel | Power Options. If you can find the APM tab,
enable the checkbox. Then you can power down automatically.

Alternatively, enable ACPI in the BIOS and reinstall Win2000.
