I have run windows xp home for about a year with no
problems. My Dad had just bought a computer, which had
no software pre-installed, so he bought windows xp home.
(this was from a computer fare.)
He has installed it, and has not yet got his internet
conection to find any help.
When he turns his computer on, sometimes after the
initial black screan that says windows xp home edition,
that has the bar across the bottom as if it is loading,
the computer just freezes. Nothing will work at all. so
we have to unplug the computer at the wall. Other times
it asks for a user password, but we have not set a
password in for any of the users.
Sorry it is so long-winded. Any help in plain English
would be much appreciated

Sounds as though you have a hardware conflict. Boot from the Windows XP CD
and run the Upgrade Advisor. This should throw up any hardware problems.

Or an illegal pirated copy.
Does it have the hologram on the top side?
Did it come with a yellow-orange sticker with the Product ID?
