: Some possibilities here:
:
: 1) Boot your XP disk and perform a "Repair" function.
:
: 2) A hardware failure that Windows 98 doesn't show up.
:
: 3) An update has installed something that XP doesn't dance with, like a
new driver.
:
: If you have access to another PC where you can mount your hard drive as a
slave, do so and run
: 1) Scandisk/checkdsk on it.
: 2) AntiVirus scan
: 3) Spyware / adware scan.
:
: The fact that you have Windows 98 on it suggest the hard drive is old and
beginning to die. It's time to backup your data.

"98 system works fine."
Just because Win 98 is installed does not mean the drive is old.
Also, there is no clue as to how many drives are installed. There could be
two or more.
