Wndows2000 Kernel problem

while upgrading the Windows Me on my Compaq notebook to
Windows2000 the system reported the follwing error:

Windows could not start because of an error in the
software. Load the needed DLL for the kernel.
Kindly advise on what steps I need to adopt to recover my
system.
