What e-mail client are you using?

You could try Saving them to Desktop, and see if you can open them from
there.

I am using Netscape.
I does not matter if it is Outlook or Netscape.

OK, there should be no problem. Either client should deliver the *.wmv
file to you. So now I 'm not sure what you mean by "use" the file. Do
you mean that it won't play when you read the e-mail? That's good -- no
e-mail client should ever open any attachment automatically.

Or that you can't make it play when you click on it? That would suggest
a plug-in problem. Do you have the correct plug-in for your version of
Netscape?

Or that it won't play if you save the file and try to play it with the
media player? If the *.wmv file is a true attachment, ie, it should play
with no problems. If it is included in the body of the message (an "in
line" attachment), then that could be the problem. I don't why, but
sometimes the file player/viewer will read such a file correctly, and
sometimes not. Ask your correspondents to attach the file not include it
- maybe that will help.

You may find that the problem goes away if you use a stand-alone e-mail
client, such as Thunderbird (go to mozilla.org to get it - it's free.) I
use PMMail, it does nothing but e-mail, and refuses to open any
attachment automatically, which is just the way I like it. Most
attachments (eg, *.jpg files) will open with a double click (PMMail
hands them off to the default viewer). Or else I save the attachment to
the desktop, and open it from there. Clumsy, but safer, since I can look
at something with a text-editor first and see if it has the correct
file-type header.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help at this point.

Sorry,I should have explianed better.
I can download the files, but they will not play with media player and or open.
Most of these files are sound ones that come as attachments.
I have lookes for a "newer' plugin and connot find one.

I have not had this problem before it has only occurred since going to XP.
ALL other files in MP3,MP,,JPEG etc work ,it is only WMV

It's a mystery to me, but two final thoughts:

A) If you have the latest version of Windows Media Player, it is Digital
Rights Management enabled - it will _not_ play certain copy-righted and
copy-protected files. Look for Media Player Classic, or other
alternative players. There are a variety of media players around - one
or another of them should play your files. Note that recent versions of
pretty well all commercial players have DRM code built in.

B) Microsoft's Media latest media player is not 100% compatible with
different versions of *.wmv file creation software. A program called
G-spot supposedly finds the codecs you need for your version of Media
Player to handle the incompatible versions.

Good luck
