Hi,
it *does* play Divx3-LM with mp3 audio, but not with AC3.
it does not complain about missing a codec or something, but
it won't start. i can only watch still pictures while sliding it.
i do have other tools, such as VirtualDub, that play it perfectly,
using the same codec(K-Lite pack), or Nero-show-time.
what seems to be the problem?

There are "always" some files that aren't processed properly by some
players, and sometimes the simplest solution is to find a player that
will do the job. If you want to take this approach, you can try KM
Player or VLC, for example. KMP will probably handle just about
anything, but there may be a need for some knowledgeable
reconfiguration of several options.

On the other hand, one has to wonder why a given file has problems
with some player(s) and not others. How do you know that VirtualDub
uses the same CODEC as WMP? I am not aware of a method to determine
which CODEC VDub uses to process the input file. If anything, I'd say
that there is a high probability that VDub DOES NOT use the same CODEC
as WMP, because the former uses VFW, rather that Directshow. In
addition, if your system contains more than one CODEC that can be used
for a given file, and these CODECs are defined with the same MERIT
("priority") values, then a CODEC is selected randomly, and a given
player may invoke one CODEC "now", and a different one "later".

Since VDub plays the file, we will assume that the file is usable.
That does not necessarily mean that it is 100% perfect. It is always
possible that there is some inconsistency in either/or the video and/
or audio streams or packaging, but some players are more "clever" (or
tolerant) than others. My suggestion would be to try another CODEC
e.g. FFDSHOW and see if that helps (you'd have to configure FFDS to
"take over" DivX3 and/or AC3). Apart from that, I'd go back to my
previous comment about VFW. Perhaps VFW handles the file properly,
whereas Directshow does not. If this is the case, your only option
would probably be to use a configurable player, where you can somehow
force particular CODECs for specific file types.
