WMP no longer my default MP3 player in MS IE6

All of a sudden, when I click on an MP3 link, Quicktime launches in IE to
play the tune. Previously, my default player was Windows Media Player.

I can't figure out what happened, nor how to return to the way it was before

I disabled the QT plugin, but when clicking on the MP3, it just says the
plugin is disabled.. does not go back to WMP. The WMP plugin is enabled.

I don't have a problem with WMP by itself.. it works fine on my computer..
ie, if I click on an MP3 file on my system, it launches WMP and plays the
track. The MP3 file type is checked and selected.

The problem is that when I click on a LINK in Internet Explorer that is an
MP3 file, it launches the Quicktime player... it USED to launch the WMP, but
for some reason, no longer does.

Any ideas on how ot restore my default player for MS IE back to WMP?

If you are referring to the File Type tab in WMP, then it is correct.. mpP3
is selected.
As I said, this is NOT a problem with WMP per se - it works fine on its own.
The problem is when trying to play an mp3 LINK in Windows Internet Explorer.
I suspect that some setting in IE needs to be fixed, but not sure where or
what.

Did you disable mime type and file type in QT?.
Are try get it to play with in Internet Explorer? if yes that eazy to click on Media button with in it you see Media Option click
on it the Setting then Reset Perferred Types.

That's what happens when you choose the default (vs custom) install of
something like QuickTime.

Right-click on an MP3 file > Open with > Select WMP & check the "Always open
with..." box.

Ok.. I guess you did not entirely read or understand my post.

The filetype settings for both QT and WMP are ok.. WMP is my default player
for mp3 files, QT is not.
Double clicking on an mp3 file on my system (ie, my hard drive), works
perfectly: it launches WMP and plays the track in WMP, not QT.

The problem is only when clicking on a LINK in Internet Explorer that is to
an mp3 file... in that case, it does NOT launch WMP, but instead, QT player.

Example, the site http://assn9.blogspot.com has a LINK in the right sidebar
(the blue music note icon).. I used to click that and it would play the
track in WMP.. it no longer does! It now plays it in QT player. How do I
restore the WMP as my default player for Internet Explorer?

btw.. I always use custom install for every program. And when QT was
installed (a year ago), I never set it to play mp3 files.

I am sorry, I know you are trying to help, but I am having some trouble
understanding your reply.

No, I did not disable mime type in QT.. how can I do this?

As far as I can see, QT is not set up to play mp3 files.. the mp3 filetype
is not selected.
On the other hand, WMP does have mp3 filetype selected.

I don't want it to play 'within' IE.. I just want IE to launch WMP when I
click on an mp3 LINK

Start QT click on Edit down to Perferences then on to QuickTime Perferences
Click on Brower tab then you should see MIME Setttings button make sure both MP3 Audio and Playlist are uncheck then go to File
Types some thing here and uncheck the buttom box "Notfly me if other applications modfy there assciations"

They are unchecked.

what now? Uninstall QT?

I am not an expert but you could open IE and click on Tools. Then select
"Manage Add-Ons".

In the window that opens select "Add-Ons that have been used by Internet
Explorer".

Scroll down the list that comes up and make sure that the Windows Media
Player Active-X Control is enabled.

Click OK and restart IE and check if things are working the way you want it
to. You might wish to disable the QT Active-X Control if you want but that
would mean any website including QT content will not let you play them!

Thanks for the reply..

It is enabled, and up to date.

still not working.

Is there some other place I can ask about this problem?

As I said I am not an expert. However, before I submit a query to Microsoft
(in case any solution does not arise on these NGs or elsewhere) I would
check the following too:

Open Windows Media Player. Click on Tools, then Options, and select the
Network tab.

Ensure that all the streaming protocols are checked. I am not too sure if
the Use Ports section is the same for every type of connection but mine is
set to 7000-7007 for wireless broadband.

In the window at the bottom check that HTTP is set to Browser and the other
two - if present - MMS and RSTP - are set to Autodetect.

thanks for your suggestions... unfortunately, they did not help either.

thanks for trying..

I had this problem once and what fixed if for me was to deselect, apply, then
reselect and apply the mp3 file type box in the Wmp options, file types menu
section.

Thanks MWS.

While my problem was a little different, clicking on MP3 links simply opened
another IE window and then nothing happened, this solution fixed my problem
as well.
