WMP Encountered an unkown error

Every time I try to play a Windows media file, I get the message above.
The Media player is version 9. I have installed Quicktime, would this
program have changed the file association and if so does anyone know the
correct association or have any other suggestions as this problem does not
come up with a error code.
Any help will be much appreciated, Paul
 
Installing and running the two together on xp will have problems.
The settings for WMP with file types,open WMP,tools,options,file types tab,
adjust.
